Avisnanam (Medicated Steam Bath)
Avi Snanam is a Medical Steam Bath. All the impurities in the body are pushed out as the individual sweats well after the steam bath in the water boiled with medicines. Steam and oil are the two main treatment media employed in Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, the head and body are not usually heated or ‘steamed’ together, hence the use of a steam box where the head protrudes out of the top of the box. A steam bath taken after a massage assists in deeper absorption of the medicinal oil into the body as well as being relaxing and cleansing.
A bandage is tied and a cylindrical cap is secured around the head. The medicated oil, warmed to body temperature, is poured into the cap and allowed to soak into the scalp. This oil is a mixture of gingely oil, castor oil, ghee, common milk, and various herb extracts; these are boiled in order to extract their full medicinal properties.
